National Museum turns over heritage sites to Bohol

TAGBILARAN CITY -- National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) Chairperson Rene Escalante, Gov. Arthur Yap, National Museum (NM) Dir. Gen. Jeremy Barns and First District Rep. Edgar Chatto signed the document for the turnover of the Plaza Rizal and Escuela de NiƱa Building from the NM to the Provincial Government of Bohol on June 17, 2021. Both sites are nationally declared Important Cultural Properties (ICPs).

The Escuela is the structure at the left corner of the old Capitol complex fronting the plaza. It is the former provincial library and then Bohol museum. The two sites have undergone reconstruction/restoration under the NM program.

The old, Spanish-era Capitol itself just across Plaza Rizal has been restored following the strong 2013 earthquake and converted into the now Bohol National Museum.

Witnessing the signing were among others, Vice Gov. Rene Relampagos and Sangguniang Panlalawigan Members Lucille Lagunay and Aldner Damalerio, and Fr. Val Pinlac who chairs the Bohol Arts and Cultural Heritage (BACH) Council. City Mayor John Geesnell Yap sent representatives City Administrator Cathy Torremocha and Tourism Officer May Hope Arsenal.
