CEBU CITY -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Regional Field Office VII is now calling for entries for its first-ever “Search for Gulayan sa Barangay” this August 2021 exclusively for the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries.
According to DSWD-7 regional information officer Leah Quintana that the Gulayan sa Barangay Program is one of the platforms of 4Ps in promoting health, nutrition, and food security and to encourage the 4Ps beneficiaries to engage in community gardening.
Quintana said that the GSP encouraged 4Ps beneficiaries to come up with communal gardens planted with various kinds of vegetables, herbs and spices where families can have access to fresh, organic, and nutritious food as well as stimulate savings, livelihood, and response to environmental protection.
The search looks for exceptional Gulayan sa Barangay entries that have been successfully cultivated by 4Ps group-beneficiaries based on the following indicators: the practice of organic culture; production and variety of edible crops and vegetables; creativity and innovativeness; resourcefulness and documentation, Quintana explained.
DSWD-7 will proclaim three winners per province in the region. The first prize will get 10,000 pesos while the second prize gets 5,000 pesos and P3,000 for the third prize. Winners will also receive a certificate of recognition.
The program is anchored on the General Appropriations Act (GAA) provision that the 4Ps shall require its beneficiaries to maintain organic vegetable gardens in open spaces within their areas, Quintana bared. (Photos: DSWD FB/Google Images)
