NEGROS ORIENTAL – The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) led the groundbreaking of the Tanjay-Bais Irrigation Project worth P975-million on February 16 that is expected to irrigate at least 3,900 hectares of farmlands in 19 barangays benefitting some 1,577 farmers in the villages of Tanjay-Bais cities and Pamplona area.
NIA-Negros Oriental Provincial Irrigation Officer Nestor Pastor said that the project is expected to make the Tanjay-Bais-Pamplona agricultural areas to be more productive soon. The national government has initially released P100-M this year for the construction of the dam in the big water source from Tanjay River with supplementary water from the existing main canal.
“Using the water is already free for the
marginalized farmers under the Irrigation Act especially those below eight
hectares, but for over eight hectares, farmers pay a minimal amount only,”
Pastor added.
He said that this project aims to provide a sustainable development in the agriculture system through quality irrigation system in the province.
Assistant Provincial Administrator Atty. Froilan Pinili representing Gov. Roel Degamo said that with this project the province will have enough production rice for food sustainability of the Negrenses amid the pandemic.
