Seafarers onboard vessels berthing at CIP enjoy free unli internet from Sept. 20-26

MINERVA BC NEWMAN

CEBU CITY – Seafarers onboard vessels docking at the Cebu International Port (CIP) will enjoy free unlimited internet access from September 20-26, 2021 in partnership with Globe that provided ships at berth with portable wi-fi units to get free internet access while docked at CIP.

Cebu Port Authority (CPA) announced this on September 20 as part of the celebration of the 22nd National Maritime Week (NMW) through the efforts of CPA and the Associated Philippine Seafarers Union (APSU) and Globe Telecom which primarily aims to help seafarers that are unable to leave their ships due to Covid-19 restrictions to keep in touch with their families.

CPA general manager Leonilo Miole said that due to pandemic-related restrictions, seafarers are currently unable to disembark their vessels while docked at ports.  They spent months at sea and long periods away from home make seafarers vulnerable to mental health issues.

“By providing free internet access while docked at CIP, seafarers can use it to connect with families and friends, watch movies and get updated.” Miole also underscored the vital role of the shipping industry and seafarers in COVID-19 response.

Miole said that seafarers are key in delivering most supplies and essential commodities needed to run societies that includes food, fuel, manufactured goods, medical supplies, among others.

APSU Officer-in-Charge and Cebu Port Commissioner for Cargo Handling and Labor Sector Atty. Joselito Pedaria said that the initiative is also a simple way of recognizing the major contributions of seafarers as front liners in the fight against COVID-19. (Photos: CPA/Google Images)
