Silliman U to host a national music, culture summit

DUMAGUETE CITY— Silliman University, through the Culture and Arts Council (CAC) is set to host a national music and culture summit on May 15-17 and co-presented by the Friends of the Environment in Negros Oriental in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

With the theme, “Gasa sa Kinaiyahan ug Kabilin,” the Philippine Music and Culture Summit aims to convene music leaders and practitioners from various fields of music in the Philippines and is designed to identify ways in which music and culture can build bridges and promote positive change.

Dr. Diomar Abrio, chairperson of the CAC observed that many young people, especially in highly urbanized cities, have limited exposure to local and traditional arts and music, and are now heavily influenced by popular songs streaming from different music platforms.

Abrio said that the summit serves as an avenue to discuss and generate new strategies and initiatives to help sustain local culture.

“The music summit hopes to start discussions with key participants from different sectors to come up with creative solutions and new strategies. It seeks to formulate policy recommendations and ideas on cultural responsibility in our local music industries and society in the 21st century,” Abrio added.

The summit also features a series of panel presentations, performances, and workshops that will engage participants in discourses about the role of music and culture in improving the world.

Professional teachers attending the event will be given 15 Continuing Professional Development points.  Interested participants may register by accessing the QR code or using this link: https://tinyurl.com/39z28zy6. (Photos: Silliman OIP)
